Taxis in Korea: Which Type Should You Take? Fares & Help for Visitors

Taxis in Korea are useful when you have luggage, miss the subway or need to reach a hotel entrance. For an ordinary city journey, start by checking a regular taxi. Choose a larger vehicle for extra people or bags, and consider an international taxi when language assistance matters.

The confusing part is that vehicle categories and app names overlap. This guide separates them, explains Seoul fare examples and shows what to do if a taxi bill seems wrong.

Prepared by SomethingMania. Official information checked October 5, 2026. Fare examples below apply to Seoul; other cities and branded services can use different rates.

Which Taxi Fits Your Trip?

OptionWhen to consider itCheck before riding
Regular taxiA routine city ridePeople and luggage fit
Deluxe / mobeom taxiYou prefer a premium vehicleHigher fare category
Large / jumbo taxi or van serviceA group or bulky luggageSeats, bag capacity and fare basis
International taxiLanguage support or a planned airport pickupAvailable language and reservation terms
Premium app serviceA particular vehicle or service levelDisplayed pricing and extra fees

Our selection rule is practical: decide how much space and communication support you need before comparing prices. Four passengers and four large suitcases may need a different vehicle from four passengers with daypacks.

Regular, Deluxe and Large Taxis in Korea

Regular taxis: the starting point for everyday travel

A regular taxi is the standard option. Colors vary, so read the vehicle category or app description rather than choosing only by paint color. Save the exact Korean address of your accommodation, especially when several hotels have similar English names.

Deluxe taxis: premium vehicles, higher fares

Deluxe taxis are also called mobeom taxis (모범택시). They cost more than regular taxis. Do not assume that a premium vehicle automatically includes an English-speaking driver.

Large vehicles: check the service, not just the shape

Large or jumbo taxis can suit groups, but passenger limits and bag space depend on the vehicle. A branded van service can have different pricing from a conventional metered large taxi.

A cargo-oriented call van is also a different service; do not treat every van at an airport as the same taxi product. Confirm the service category and price before accepting a ride. The Korea Tourism Organization’s taxi overview explains the main options.

International Taxis and Taxi Apps Are Different Things

An international taxi is a service with foreign-language support, useful for travelers arranging a pickup. Ask which language is available and whether the trip uses a meter, a zone price or an agreed booking price. See Visit Seoul’s international taxi information.

An app is a way to request a vehicle; it is not one universal fare category. The same platform may list regular, van and premium options. Read the selected service before confirming.

k.ride is designed for international travelers and describes vehicle choices and card or mobile payment on its official website. Set it up before you need a ride and confirm that your own payment method works. Availability and service options can vary.

Seoul Taxi Fares: A Useful Reference

The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s fare table lists these base fares. They are starting charges, not the total price of a hotel or airport journey.

Seoul service / timeBase fare
Regular sedan, daytime₩4,800 for the first 1.6 km
Regular sedan, 10–11 PM and 2–4 AM₩5,800 for the first 1.6 km
Regular sedan, 11 PM–2 AM₩6,700 for the first 1.6 km
Conventional large / deluxe category, daytime₩7,000 for the first 3 km
Conventional large / deluxe category, 10 PM–4 AM₩8,400 for the first 3 km

Distance, slow-moving traffic and applicable surcharges can raise the total. A branded premium or van option may follow its own pricing. Check the booking screen instead of applying this table to every app product.

Before an airport trip, ask whether tolls and other charges are included. Compare door-to-door options in our Incheon Airport to Seoul transport guide.

Late Airport Arrivals: Landing Time Is Not Taxi Time

Budget around when you actually use the taxi, not just the flight’s scheduled arrival. Immigration, baggage collection, walking to the taxi stand and a queue can move your departure into a surcharge period. Allow for delays without assuming a fixed airport processing time.

Time of travel (Korea time)Seoul standard taxi night surcharge
04:00–22:00No night surcharge
22:00–23:0020%
23:00–02:0040%
02:00–04:0020%

Planning example: if your flight lands at 21:30 but you reach a Seoul standard taxi at 22:30, you are travelling in a night-surcharge period. If the ride continues after 23:00, do not assume that the initial 20% rate is fixed for the whole journey; the meter applies the relevant time-based fare. This example does not predict how long airport formalities will take.

The airport’s official taxi guide lists the same time bands for Incheon standard taxis, but a 30% surcharge from 23:00–04:00 for Gyeonggi standard taxis. It lists a 20% night surcharge for deluxe/jumbo taxis from 22:00–04:00, with 23:00–04:00 stated for Gyeonggi taxis. Confirm the vehicle’s registered area and service category; an international flat-fare or branded booking may use different terms.

Ask separately about tolls, app fees and the full fare basis before boarding. If considering rail or a bus instead, check your terminal, destination and the actual last departure.

Before You Get In: A Short Checklist

  • Confirm the vehicle category, people and luggage capacity.
  • Show the full destination address, not just a neighborhood.
  • For an app booking, match the license plate to your assigned car.
  • Check whether payment is automatic or paid to the driver.
  • For a metered trip, check that the meter is running; for a quoted booking, retain the agreed price and terms.

Use the designated taxi boarding areas at Incheon Airport. If unsure about the correct queue or service, ask airport staff before boarding.

Seoul’s taxi usage guide explains that 빈차 means vacant and 예약 means reserved. It also lists cash, credit cards and transportation cards as payment options. Card compatibility can vary; keep a backup payment method and check your app’s payment status to avoid paying twice.

Taxi Fare Dispute in Korea: What Should You Do?

A higher-than-expected bill is not automatically an unfair charge. First compare the service you booked, journey time, meter or agreed fare, and any tolls or surcharges. An app estimate may differ from the final bill.

For example, a regular Seoul taxi beginning a journey at 11:30 PM has a higher starting fare than one taken during the day. That difference alone does not show overcharging. A premium service also should not be compared with the regular daytime rate.

1. Ask for an explanation and receipt

If it is safe, calmly ask which items make up the total. A translation app can help with a short question. These are practical phrases you can show, rather than official legal wording:

  • Could you explain the extra charge?
    추가 요금이 무엇인지 설명해 주세요.
  • Does this include tolls?
    통행료가 포함된 금액인가요?
  • Please give me a receipt.
    영수증을 주세요.
  • I think I may have been charged twice.
    요금이 두 번 결제된 것 같아요.

Check whether an app entry is a completed payment or a temporary card authorization. For a booking or payment problem, contact that app’s support from the trip history and attach the relevant receipt.

2. Save facts while they are available

  • Full vehicle registration number and taxi company, if shown.
  • Date, pickup time and arrival time.
  • Pickup point and destination.
  • Receipt, actual charge and payment record.
  • App trip details or agreed booking price.
  • A brief factual explanation of the disputed amount.

Record information only when safe. Keep evidence for the booking provider or official complaint channel. If you do not have a receipt, retain the records you do have and explain that clearly.

3. Choose the right help channel

Tourist advice and language help: 1330. Dial 1330 in Korea, or +82-2-1330 from overseas. The official 1330 page also offers online call and chat options. It can help you identify a suitable complaint route; it is not an emergency dispatch service.

Seoul taxi complaints: the city’s multilingual QR reporting service. It covers issues such as overcharging, failure to use a meter and refusal of passengers. Open the reporting link from Seoul’s official taxi complaint guide. This is a Seoul service, not a nationwide taxi complaint form.

Seoul telephone assistance: call 02-120, then press 9 and 1 for English, following the voice menu. The city’s contact page lists foreign-language assistance from 9 AM to 6 PM Korea time; check its current hours.

Tourism complaints elsewhere in Korea: ask 1330 for the appropriate local channel or use the Korea Tourism Organization’s Tourist Complaint Center. Its online process includes email verification, submission, review and referral where needed. A complaint does not guarantee an immediate refund.

4. If the situation becomes threatening

If you face violence or an immediate threat, call 112 for police. For an ambulance, fire or rescue, call 119. State your location and request an interpreter. A routine fare question belongs with customer support or a complaint channel; immediate danger needs emergency assistance.

Save our guide to calling 112 or 119 without speaking Korean for location tips and short phrases. The official tourism emergency FAQ identifies these emergency numbers.

From Booking to Drop-off: A Practical Ride Walkthrough

Set a pickup point the car can actually reach

Before requesting a ride, match the map pin to the side of the street and building entrance where you are standing. A hotel can have a main entrance, a rear door and a parking entrance; the map’s business label may not identify the best pickup spot. Ask reception for the taxi pickup point if the frontage is unclear.

For an app ride, stay at the confirmed location and match the vehicle plate with the booking. If the car appears to be across the road, contact the driver through the app rather than crossing hurriedly or getting into a different taxi.

Confirm the destination and payment before moving

Show the hotel or attraction’s full Korean address. If you need a particular entrance, include that instruction separately from the business name. For a prebooked airport pickup, keep the operator’s meeting-point instructions and contact method; do not replace them with an ordinary taxi queue without checking the booking.

Show these questions if needed: 이 주소로 가 주세요. — Please go to this address. 여기가 탑승 장소인가요? — Is this the pickup point? 앱에서 자동 결제되나요? — Is payment automatic in the app? The answer depends on your selected service and booking.

If the driver cannot find you

Send a short location description through the booking channel, such as the entrance name and nearby sign. Follow any new meeting instructions only after confirming them with your assigned driver. If the ride cannot proceed, check the app’s cancellation terms rather than assuming there is no charge.

Check the receipt before leaving the car

For a metered journey, distinguish the displayed fare from tolls or separately stated charges. For a quoted journey, compare the total with the accepted quote and its exclusions. Check the app’s completed-payment record before paying again in cash or by card.

Illustrative bill, not a route estimate: a ₩28,000 fare plus a separately charged ₩3,000 toll would total ₩31,000. If the booking says the toll is included, do not automatically add it again. Ask which item explains any difference; retain the actual receipt and booking record for support.

Before getting out: check the seat and luggage area, retain the trip record, and confirm you have reached the correct entrance. The sequence above is an editorial checklist; fare categories and payment conditions remain those of the chosen provider.

Choose Your Ride Before Comparing the Price

For a short city journey, check a regular taxi first. For a group, confirm space before booking. For a planned airport pickup, decide whether language support and a confirmed meeting point justify another service.

Save your hotel address, review how your selected taxi is charged and keep the receipt. Those small preparations are also the most useful starting point if a bill later needs checking.
