Wondering where to stay in Seoul for first-time visitors? Myeongdong, Itaewon and Gangnam can all work, but they suit different trips. The best choice depends on where you will spend your days, how you like to spend your evenings and how much travelling you want to do.
This guide compares the three areas as accommodation bases. It does not rank individual hotels or claim that one neighborhood is always cheaper. Room prices, noise and accessibility vary from property to property.
If you are still choosing your sightseeing priorities, start with our best things to do in Seoul. For a practical route, use our 3-day Seoul itinerary for first-time visitors alongside this accommodation guide.
Myeongdong vs Itaewon vs Gangnam: Quick Comparison
| Area | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong | A short first trip focused on central sightseeing, shopping and Namsan | Busy shopping streets; room noise and space need checking |
| Itaewon | International dining and evenings around Itaewon and Hannam | Hills, nightlife noise and transfers can affect convenience |
| Gangnam | Trips centered on south-of-river shopping, appointments or business | A broad area; more travelling for many historic-center attractions |
Our editorial recommendation for the three-day route linked above is Myeongdong. Choose Itaewon if its dining and evening scene are a priority, or Gangnam if most of your planned stops are south of the Han River. These are itinerary-based recommendations, not findings from a hotel inspection.
1. Staying in Myeongdong: A Practical Base for Central Sightseeing
Myeongdong suits visitors who want shopping, restaurants and a central starting point. It works particularly well when your plan combines the palace district, traditional neighborhoods, markets and Namsan.
Choose the Right Side of Myeongdong
Myeongdong Station is on Line 4, while Euljiro 1-ga Station is on Line 2. Both can be useful, but they are different stations serving different hotel locations. The Korea Tourism Organization’s transport-service guide identifies these lines, along with Itaewon on Line 6.
Do not assume every hotel with “Myeongdong” in its name is next to the same station. Check the exact entrance, walking route and elevator access. A slightly longer but level walk can be easier with luggage than a shorter route involving stairs.
Who Myeongdong Suits
Choose it if this is a short first visit, central sightseeing takes up most of your plan, and you would like to return to a familiar area for dinner. It is also worth comparing for family trips, provided the property has the room size and facilities you need.
What to Check Before Booking
Read recent reviews about street noise, sound insulation and room size. Confirm whether the room has an external window, whether breakfast is included and whether luggage can be stored before check-in. A convenient neighborhood does not make every property equally comfortable.
For our three-day itinerary, keep Day 1 for traditional Seoul, Day 2 for Myeongdong and Namsan, and Day 3 for Seongsu and the river. Staying here makes the second day especially straightforward.
2. Staying in Itaewon: International Dining and Flexible Evenings
Itaewon is worth considering when restaurants, cafes and evenings in the Itaewon–Hannam area matter as much as the sightseeing list. It can be a good choice for travellers who prefer to finish the day near their accommodation rather than commute back after dinner.
Itaewon, Noksapyeong and Hangangjin Are Different Starting Points
Seoul’s official tourism site describes the wider Itaewon area around Noksapyeong, Itaewon and Hangangjin stations on Line 6. See the official accommodation-area description for geographical context.
Compare the actual nearest station instead of treating the whole area as one hotel zone. Some properties sit uphill or on residential streets. Check the route with luggage and ask the property about stairs if mobility is a concern.
Who Itaewon Suits
Choose it when you want to explore local dining options and spend several evenings nearby. If you have dietary needs, check individual restaurants’ ingredients or certification; an international dining area does not guarantee that every venue can accommodate you.
The Main Trade-offs
A room near nightlife may be convenient for going out but less suitable for light sleepers. Look for recent comments about weekend noise and the direction the room faces. Nearby quieter streets can still involve a slope or a longer walk.
For the palace district and Myeongdong, check each journey rather than assuming there will be a direct subway ride. Depending on the starting point, a transfer or bus may be more useful.
If you follow our three-day itinerary from Itaewon, keep the daytime groups together and return for dinner on one or two nights.
3. Staying in Gangnam: Choose a Specific Station, Not Just the District
Gangnam is a strong candidate when your trip includes south-of-river shopping, business meetings or appointments. It can also work for sightseeing, but it deserves a closer look at journey times when your main interests are palaces and traditional streets north of the river.
Gangnam Station, Yeoksam and Samseong Are Not Interchangeable
“Gangnam” can describe a broad part of Seoul rather than one compact hotel neighborhood. Start with your destination: Gangnam Station for the station-area shopping and dining, Yeoksam for an itinerary centered nearby, or Samseong when the COEX area is your priority. VISITKOREA’s Gangnam Station shopping guide identifies the station’s Line 2 access.
If you are considering Sinsa or another part of the wider south-of-river area, assess that location separately. A listing labelled “Gangnam” does not mean every district attraction is within walking distance.
Who Gangnam Suits
Choose a Gangnam-area base when several important stops are nearby, or when you want to combine work commitments with sightseeing. It can save time for that kind of trip even if it adds travel to the historic center.
What to Check Before Booking
Compare the actual station walk, room noise from major roads, and the route to your appointments or attractions. Check hotel facilities individually; a business-oriented location does not guarantee a desk, laundry service or late checkout.
From Gangnam, the palace district involves a journey across the river. Accommodation near Samseong is more convenient for repeated COEX visits.
Before You Book: Test the Exact Hotel Address
Shortlist two hotels, then compare the same journeys from each property’s actual entrance. Use your arrival point, one central sightseeing stop and one evening destination from your itinerary. Record the suggested station, number of transfers and final walk. This comparison is an editorial planning method, not a measured hotel ranking.
| Search term to copy | What it identifies |
|---|---|
| 명동역 / 을지로입구역 | Myeongdong Station / Euljiro 1-ga Station |
| 이태원역 / 녹사평역 / 한강진역 | Itaewon / Noksapyeong / Hangangjin stations |
| 강남역 / 역삼역 / 삼성역 | Gangnam / Yeoksam / Samseong stations |
| 엘리베이터 | Elevator: useful when checking station access with luggage |
Search the hotel’s full name and Korean street address as well as the station. Save the address from the booking confirmation, a screenshot of the entrance and the return route. A district name alone can lead you to a different property or a distant part of the neighbourhood.
Example: if your plans are mostly palaces and central shopping, compare the actual Myeongdong and Itaewon hotel routes to those stops. If you have consecutive appointments around COEX, compare the actual Gangnam-area properties with your meeting address. Let the repeated journeys decide rather than treating every hotel in one district as equally convenient.
Send this message before committing to a booking: “Our flight is scheduled to arrive at [time], and we expect to reach the hotel around [time]. Can we check in then? What should we do if the flight is delayed? Is there a step-free route from the nearest station, and which exit should we use? Is there a lift to our room?” Replace the brackets with your own estimates and keep the hotel’s written reply.
For a light sleeper, add: “Can you confirm whether this room category faces a main road or an entertainment street?” Compare the answer with recent reviews of the same room type. For a family, confirm the permitted guest count and actual bed arrangement before comparing totals.
Which Area Matches Your Travel Style?
| Your priority | Suggested starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| First visit with palaces, markets and Namsan | Myeongdong | Hotel entrance, nearest station and room noise |
| Dining and evenings around Itaewon–Hannam | Itaewon | Slope, night noise and daytime transit routes |
| Several Gangnam-area appointments or shopping stops | Gangnam near the relevant station | Exact location and routes to your main destinations |
| Travelling with children or limited mobility | Compare properties in all three | Lifts, slopes, room layout and accessible station routes |
| Getting the lowest total trip cost | Compare identical dates and room conditions | Taxes, meals, transport, cancellation and luggage costs |
How to Compare Hotel Prices Fairly
There is no reliable fixed price ranking for these three neighborhoods. A small room in one area may cost less than a larger room elsewhere, and weekends, holidays and events can change availability.
Compare the same dates, number of guests, room type and cancellation terms. Check the final total with taxes and fees, then add breakfast or transport you expect to pay separately.
Use this simple comparison: total accommodation cost + extra transport + excluded meals or services. A cheaper room can lose its advantage if it requires frequent taxis or does not have facilities you need.
Use the official Seoul accommodation directory as one research starting point, then confirm current room details and booking conditions with the property. This guide does not provide live hotel rates or availability.
Airport Arrival and Late-Night Return Checklist
Check the airport journey to your exact hotel before booking. Confirm the current train or airport-bus route, transfer requirements, final walk and service hours for your arrival date. None of these three neighborhood labels guarantees a direct airport connection. Our Incheon Airport to Seoul transport guide compares routes to Myeongdong, Itaewon and Gangnam.
For a late arrival, ask about reception hours, late check-in and luggage access. For evenings out, check the last useful train for your route before leaving; a nightlife district does not mean public transport operates all night.
A Worked Hotel Comparison: Count Repeated Journeys
Compare properties using the same trip, rather than giving each district one overall score. Write down your actual hotel entrance, airport arrival route, two main daytime destinations and the place where you expect to finish most evenings. Search each journey at the time you expect to travel.
Time: count the outward and return legs
Hypothetical example, not a measurement of Myeongdong, Itaewon or Gangnam: Hotel A’s route to one activity takes 25 minutes each way and Hotel B’s takes 45 minutes each way. That is a 40-minute difference for one return journey. If that pattern occurs on all three sightseeing days, it adds up to two hours. Use your own map results; do not assign these numbers to an entire neighborhood.
Then consider where you will eat dinner. A property with longer daytime travel may still suit a dining-led trip if it eliminates several evening journeys. Count the movements you would actually make, not every possible attraction in Seoul.
Cost: compare the saving with the extra travel
Suppose Hotel B saves ₩20,000 per night over three nights: the accommodation saving is ₩60,000. If the location leads you to spend an additional ₩15,000 on transport on each of three days, the extra transport totals ₩45,000 and the net saving is ₩15,000. These are invented numbers for demonstrating the calculation, not hotel rates or taxi quotations.
The remaining decision is whether that saving is worth the extra transfers, walking or time for your group. A traveller with a stroller, heavy bags or limited mobility may reasonably choose the property with the simpler route.
Separate a room problem from a location problem
Good transport access cannot resolve a room that is too small for the permitted guests. Likewise, a spacious room does not establish step-free access from the street. Check both: the room’s actual bed and guest arrangement, then the station exit, building entrance and lift route.
For the linked three-day sightseeing plan, start by testing a Myeongdong property against a Jongno attraction and your Namsan day. For an Itaewon dining-led stay, test the route back from the restaurant you actually choose. For repeated COEX appointments, compare a Samseong-area property with the appointment entrance rather than with “Gangnam” as a general label.
Decision to record: “We chose this hotel because it reduces these two repeated journeys and meets these room-access requirements.” Keep the hotel’s written answers with your booking. This method supplements the area comparison; it is not an inspection or endorsement of a particular hotel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Myeongdong or Gangnam better for a first Seoul trip?
For the central sightseeing route in our three-day guide, Myeongdong is our recommended starting point. If several key destinations are in Gangnam, choose a hotel near the station that serves them instead.
Is Itaewon only for nightlife?
No. You can choose it for dining and neighborhood exploration, too. Whether it is comfortable for your stay depends on the exact street, room and your tolerance for evening noise.
Should I change hotels during a three-day stay?
Usually one base is easier for this itinerary. Moving hotels adds packing, checkout and luggage handling. Consider a split stay only if it solves a specific problem, such as a separate business commitment or airport schedule.
Should I choose a hotel beside a subway station?
A short, practical station walk is useful, but assess stairs, hills and the route to the hotel entrance. Compare the station’s lines with your itinerary rather than looking only at distance.
Choose Your Base Around Your Actual Seoul Plans
Myeongdong is our starting recommendation for a short trip focused on central sights. Itaewon is a useful alternative for a dining-led stay with evenings nearby. Gangnam makes sense when your most important stops are in its part of the city.
